Península Valdés: Land of Giants
Departures from Puerto Madryn
Península Valdés Protected Natural Area
Discover a World Natural Heritage Site.
Located in Argentine Patagonia, in the northeastern part of Chubut Province, this peninsula is home to the region’s five most emblematic marine species. Here, they find calm waters and sheltered bays to reproduce and complete their life cycles. For this reason, this full-day excursion allows you to explore a protected area declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, thanks to its remarkable biodiversity and delicate ecosystems.
First, we will depart from the city of Puerto Madryn toward the picturesque village of Puerto Pirámides. This is the only place where boat-based Southern Right Whale watching is carried out. This wonderful experience can be included if we are within the season.- Please check the wildlife calendar.-
Wildlife and landscapes of Península Valdés
Then, we will continue toward Caleta Valdés, an outstanding wildlife reserve. Here, the beaches and rocky tidal flats come to life with the birth of Southern Elephant Seals. Just a few kilometers away, pairs of Magellanic Penguins reunite, planning to spend the entire summer raising their chicks before leaving at the end of March.
The route continues toward Punta Norte, home to one of the largest breeding and nursery colonies of South American Sea Lions. At the same time, this pebble beach with its sloping shore offers an exceptional setting. With a bit of luck, we may witness a spectacle that is unique in the world: an ancestral sea lion hunting technique, the intentional stranding of Orcas.
Finally, we will return while observing different landscapes, such as grasslands, salt flats, and dunes. Here, faithful residents such as Elegant Crested Tinamous, Patagonian Maras, Lesser Rheas, and Guanacos may also appear.
We recommend checking the wildlife calendar to learn the specific season for each species.
